New Web Address!

Hi folks! As you may have noticed, Dobbin’s Bobbins has been a bit quiet recently. Not only is this due to me focusing on uni work (for which there is never enough time!), I’ve also been busy moving domains. Dobbin’s Bobbins has officially dropped the ‘WordPress’ part of it’s address and can now be found at dobbinsbobbins.com. Dobbin and I look forward to seeing you there!

Cute? Tick. Kitch? Tick. Charlotte from English Girl At Home is onto a winner! To see this awesome Emery Dress in all it’s glory and hear about the inspiration behind it, head over to Charlotte’s blogpost.

I first came across Charlotte as the organiser behind the incredible successful meet-up Sew Brum. Incredibly friendly and approachable, she helped me in the initial stages of organising the giveaways (see bottom of post). English Girl At Home is a wonderful mix of sewing, knitting and dyeing, and I love looking through all her old posts for inspiration. I loved her Mini Dress with Raglan Sleeves (as well as SO many others), but it’s Charlotte’s 1 Naturally Dyed Wardrobe which I cannot get enough of! I totally recommend checking it out.

Let’s fly off to Neverland! Or instead we could head over to Paisley Roots to see more pictures of Karly’s fun tank top that she made for her little ‘Darling’ (see what I did there?!)

I’m a huge fan of Paisley Roots. Karly’s Legend Dress for this season’s KCW was brilliant! That teepee fabric! A few days ago, Karly posted her Vivie Dress. Not only is it a gorgeous design in a fab fabric, but it’s an inspiration. Karly made it as part of her Re-Sew-Lution, which I think everyone should imitate! Head on over to her blog to find out more!

World Book Day Blog Tour: Day Five!

Can you believe it’s Friday already?!! Remember to have a look at our previous days of the tour if you haven’t seen them all… (Days One, Two, Three & Four, plus our fabulous giveaways!)

fox-16.jpg

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a tad obsessed with anything fox related. I even wrote a blogpost about it! So when I saw Amy from Sewn in the Attic‘s teaser photo I was VERY excited! To find out all about her inspiration and to see Amy’s embroidered Mr Fox in all his glory, be sure to read her blogpost here.

I first met Amy at the end of October last year at Sew Brum and I knew right away that I liked her! Living close to where I went to school, Amy and I were able to chat easily and it was nice to be able to talk about sewing (and the joys of a sewing room!) with someone like-minded. Amy has sewn herself the most amazing handmade wardrobe, including this gorgeous Colette Moneta Dress. Amy is the sole reason I have planned to make myself some knit dresses this year!

Further inspiration today comes from a beautifully illustrated Japanese children’s book, and Emi from Just Add Fabric interprets the watercolours with such sensitivity. For femininity, feathers and flair head over to Emi’s blogpost and marvel over some very pretty pictures!

I love scrolling through Emi’s Instagram feed and blog history. Honestly her Mori Dress from a couple of days ago just blew me away. Her fabric choice was simply stunning and tempted me to stray away from my favourite pastel shades! Another recent make which I need to share with you all is her tester version of the brand new pattern from Rock the Stitch: the Trinity tee. From the teal and cream colour scheme, to the most adorable bunting-clad woodland print, Emi’s version is perfect. Remember that this new pattern is part of the Giveaway 1 package!

World Book Day Blog Tour: Day Four!

Day Four of the World Book Day Blog Tour is an abundance of girly prettiness.

What are little girls made of?

Sugar and spice and all things nice

That’s what little girls are made of.

I’m so pleased to be able to introduce Victoria from As It Seams today. She’s such a trooper. And her post is chock full will loveliness! For SO many more illustration-inpired creations head on over to As It Seams and indulge in a literary trip through time.

Victoria reminds me a lot of myself, her mind brimming with creative ideas, with not enough time to share them all with the world! I love reading her blog, and seeing her creative interpretations of the latest pattern designs. Knits can often seem scary to newbie sewers, so I think it’s really important to highlight Victoria’s gorgeous little panda tunic, her first attempt at knits, which I’m sure you’ll agree was a huge success! As was her Aster Cardigan, which was just as adorable as her outfit sketches!

It’s Tinny time! I’d recognise that collar anywhere, and I’m hopping with excitement to read all about Isabel from Bel’Etoile‘s inspiration from her favourite childhood book! Plus, how precious are those little mint shoes?!!?

I only recently discovered Bel’Etoile, but I was so pleased when I did. Her recent ‘Princess Dress’, named by her daughter (how sweet?) and designed by Isabel herself, was stunning in a coral and gold Michael Miller fabric. However, the dress that initially caught my eye on Instagram and introduced me to the world of Isabel’s creative imagination was this amazing Hot Air Balloon Tinny dress. I love the way it evokes a sense of fun and memories of summertime.

World Book Day Blog Tour: Day Three!

Can you believe it is Day Three already?? If you missed Day One & Two, then be sure to check them out. They’re worth it! As is the Giveaway which you can find links to at the bottom of this post!

img_7147-2

First up today is Kate from Sewing With Kate with her AMAZING upcycled, storybook creation. Every last detail (down the hidden bias binding) has been thoughtfully considered and I am in awe! To find out more (ah, that rhymed!), head on over to Kate’s post. She even has a crafty surprise extra for you all to admire too!

I first came across Kate as a fellow tester of Brooklyn Pattern Company’s Henry Dress. Kate creates THE coolest clothes for herself and family members. Her black and bronze raglan dress inspired me to download a couple of new shift dress patterns to have a go at. And her Henry Dress Hack=Henry Skirt was just utter genius!! Honestly, I thoroughly encourage you to give it a go!

Our second participant of the day is Ajaire from Call Ajaire, and she will be posting her creation very soon, so be sure to check that out. I can’t wait to see it, the anticipation is killing me!

I am completely in love with Coffee & Thread’s new Eleena Dress and Ajaire’s version is no exception. I love her choice of fabric and the subtle difference in shade between the collar and main fabric is so effective. Another wonderful interpretation of a favourite design was Ajaire’s Antalya Dress. Who knew mustard could look so pretty?!

World Book Day Blog Tour: Day Two!

It’s Day Two! Welcome back to the World Book Day Blog Tour and boy have I got some prettiness to tease you with today!?

img_8116-2a

How sweet is that little collar?

When I first became a part of the online sewing community, one of the first bloggers I followed on social media was Maria from Fairies, Bubbles & Co. Therefore I was ecstatic when she agreed to take part in the World Book Day Blog Tour.

Maria creates the most beautiful vintage-inspired garments in timeless fabrics. I absolutely love her wintry plaid ‘robe taille basse’ dress and the Japanese summer top she made for her daughter during KCW Summer 2015. I love the way Maria uses Liberty-style fabrics as subtle design details on so many of her pieces. She has a distinctive style that I just adore!

You may notice we’ve had a slight re-jig of the line-up, and I’m so pleased to be introducing Shelly from Sew Shelly Sew on Day Two! When Shelly sent me the photos from her shoot, I knew you’d all love what she made, and now you get to see her ‘Secret Garden’ dress a few days earlier. Yay!

Shelly makes the sweetest clothes for her children and I particularly love all of her recent versions of the Coffee & Thread Eleena Dress (she also made one in a knit, which worked SO well!). On a side note, Coffee & Thread have kindly donated a pattern of choice for both Giveaway 1 & 2, so be sure to enter them both. Anyway, back to Shelly! Perhaps one of the cutest sews I’ve seen over the last few months was her gorgeous Wild Things Coat. I mean who doesn’t love bear ears on a garment?! Head on over to her blog to find out more about her amazing World Book Day Dress as well as a heap of other cute sews!

World Book Day Blog Tour: Day One!

It’s official, the World Book Day Blog Tour has begun and we’re kicking off with two adorable literary inspired creations (if I do say so myself!).

IMG_1099

I thought I’d kick off the week’s proceedings with a little something I was busy sewing throughout last week’s Kid’s Clothes Week. The theme was ‘Toys’ so something tells me those pockets might be hiding something exciting… Head on over to my blog post to find out!

IMG_9281 PM

I-Spy a Satya! Spring is in the air with this pretty pastel romper!

The first of our participants is Jenya from While she was sleeping. Jenya is a wonderful blogger and an equally talented seamstress. I love her version of the Louisa Dress, as well as the Tiny Mice Dress. (Although I have to say it was difficult picking out favourites as I love them all!)

Head on over to While she was sleeping to see more photos and to discover which childhood book inspired this cute little romper.

World Book Day Blog Tour: My Creation!

When I was considering which book to use as inspiration for this blog tour, I was spoiled for choice. I was surrounded by literature and was always a keen reader as a child and had many ‘favourites’ along the way! I made my way through the family photo albums and was reminded of one of my favourite Christmas presents: my dollshouse. Funnily enough, I added it to the top of my list to Santa after being inspired by a book my Mum used to read to me. Inside The Dollshouse: A Miniature Tale is a wonderful story about two little dolls who watch as their dollshouse is built for them.

IMG_1092

I was fascinated by the idea of toys coming to life (this was years before I ever watched Toy Story!) and of their secret life behind closed doors. I would spend hours acting out scenes from the story in my own dollshouse and would create soft furnishings out of scraps of fabric. It was with this in mind, and KCW’s wonderful Winter Theme of Toys, that I decided to create a Dollshouse Skirt.

IMG_1094-1

First I sewed a simple skirt using Tilda’s Jean Teal Quilting Cotton, a ditsy vintage-inspired pink floral and teal print. I bought this a while ago from The Little Sewing Company, and it was a dream to sew with.

IMG_1099

For the pockets themselves I used this wonderful cross-print quilting cotton from Cotton+Steel which I bought from The Village Haberdashery. In fact, all the fabrics I used for this skirt were from my stash because I wanted to continue the ‘scrap fabric’ tradition from when I was a child.

IMG_1100

IMG_1101

IMG_1102

The pockets open up to reveal the dollshouse itself. I appliquéd traditional furniture in coordinating fabrics. I chose to sew the pockets ‘upside down’ so that they would serve as ‘fabric books’ when the wearer sits down and opens them on her lap. Perfect for long journeys or boring waiting rooms!

IMG_1107

And of course, the pockets themselves are fully functional and can hold all those treasures a little girl wants to carry around with her!

IMG_1108

IMG_1109

IMG_1112

IMG_1113

I made the little doll herself with a popper on her back so that she can be moved around the dolllshouse and interact with the various items of furniture. The dress she is wearing is also removable with a popper which can be attached inside the wardrobe, meaning she can have a change of clothes!

I am so happy with how the skirt turned out and I cannot wait to give it as a gift to a very lucky little 4 year old very soon!

Reading sparks the imagination. Imagination sparks creativity. I certainly wouldn’t be the creative person I am today, with all the dreams and ideas I have, without books. I have a lot to thank books for, so I really enjoyed looking back and being inspired by one of my old favourites to create this skirt.

Don’t forget to check out While she was sleeping‘s blogpost today featuring the most adorable Satya Romper, as well as all the other participants throughout the rest of the week! Also remember to enter the FOUR giveaways I am running alongside this blog tour (read all about the prizes and how to enter here).

Happy Sewing & Reading!
